What happens happens? t.a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I understand that, in a sentimental nation, bromides like Biden\u2019s might be considered necessary. But I fear he believes what he says. When he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2019\/06\/19\/joe-biden-to-rich-donors-nothing-would-fundamentally-change-if-hes-elected\/\">spoke to wealthy donors<\/a> at the Carlyle hotel in Manhattan last year, he told them not only that \u201cno one\u2019s standard of living will change, nothing would fundamentally change\u201d, but also that \u201cyou have to be able to reach consensus under our system\u201d. In this context, consensus looks like appeasement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/d99e60ff20aa2959a68b6a371380a003c0868d93\/0_0_5000_3000\/master\/5000.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=049023cb594e64e4fe0ca532708969cd\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Obama\u2019s attempt to reconcile irreconcilable forces, to paper over the chasms, arguably gave Donald Trump his opening. Rather than confronting the banks whose reckless greed had caused the financial crisis, he allowed his Treasury secretary, Timothy Geithner, to \u201cfoam the runway\u201d for them by allowing 10 million families to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/posteverything\/wp\/2017\/01\/12\/democrats-cant-win-until-they-recognize-how-bad-obamas-financial-policies-were\/\">lose their homes<\/a>. His justice department and the attorney general blocked efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/why-isnt-wall-street-in-jail-179414\/\">pursue apparent wrongdoing<\/a> by the financiers. He pressed for trade agreements that would erode workers\u2019 rights and environmental standards, and presided over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2020\/01\/09\/trends-in-income-and-wealth-inequality\/\">widening of inequality<\/a> and the concentration of wealth, casualisation of labour and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/2015-becomes-the-biggest-m-a-year-ever-1449187101\">record mergers and acquisitions<\/a>.
