\u00abStick your Neck Out\u00bb war und ist in Amerika das Motto der f\u00fcr ihren couragierten und hartn\u00e4ckigen Kampf f\u00fcr das Gemeingut ausgezeichneten Giraffe-Heroes. Vor bald f\u00fcnf Jahren wurde ein europ\u00e4ischer Ableger, die Giraffe Heroes Foundation (GHF) vom Verfasser dieses Artikels hier in Basel gegr\u00fcndet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Geschichte des Giraffe Heroes Project ist 40 Jahre alt und geht zur\u00fcck auf die noch heute aktiven Gr\u00fcnder Ann Medlock und John Graham: Ann war und ist eine hervorragende Schriftstellerin, Journalistin, Feministin; ihr Mann John, ex-Diplomat, schmiss seine vielversprechende Karriere mit 39 Jahren hin, als er erkannte, dass die Interessen der Herren, denen er zu dienen hatte, nichts mehr mit den Idealen der amerikanischen Verfassung zu tun hatten. Er lernte Ann kurze Zeit danach kennen, und es war Liebe auf den ersten Blick. Zur gleichen Zeit hatte Ann grade das GH-Projekt begonnen, und von nun an \u00fcbernahmen sie dessen Auf- und Ausbau gemeinsam: sie als f\u00e4hige Journalistin, er mit seiner Erfahrung im Ausw\u00e4rtigen Dienst. Einen H\u00f6hepunkt bildete die Perestroika-Zeit, als Gorbatschow die beiden nach Moskau rief, um im von den physischen und psychischen Narben der Ein-Parteien-Diktatur gezeichneten Russland den Sinn f\u00fcr Mut und Gemeinwohl wiederzuerwecken. \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die ersten zwei Jahre nach der Gr\u00fcndung des Basler NGO verlief die Entwicklung zwar nicht einfach, aber im hergebrachten Sinn: Giraffen-Kandidaten wurden empfohlen und von der GHF-Jury best\u00e4tigt (oder abgelehnt) und in das Netzwerk eingeflochten. Dabei geht es uns bei GHF insbesondere um die Bildung von Synergien unter den verschiedenen Pers\u00f6nlichkeiten und ihrer Aktivit\u00e4ten, um so den Wirkungsradius ihrer Eins\u00e4tze, ebenso wie die Effektivit\u00e4t derselben, zu erweitern bzw. zu erh\u00f6hen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bloody Pandemic changed it all. Zuf\u00e4lligerweise las ich im Herbst 2019 die hervorragende Chronik der sog. Spanischen Grippe von John Barry (ehemaliger Gesundheitsberater unter Barack Obama) The Great Influenza<\/em>, ein ebenso genau medizinisch und historisch recherchierter wie packend geschriebener Tatsachenbericht. (Nur eine Einzelheit am Schluss des Buches: Es war mir bis dato unbekannt geblieben, dass Woodrow Wilson abrupt und vorzeitig von den Versailler Vertragsverhandlungen am Kriegsende abreisen musste, da der Virus ihn packte \u2013 6 Monate sp\u00e4ter verstarb er an einem Hirnschlag \u2013, was dazu f\u00fchrte, dass seine \u2018Sch\u00fctzlinge\u2019, die Deutschen n\u00e4mlich, der Rachsucht der alliierten Front machtlos ausgeliefert blieben, was zum Diktat der Vertr\u00e4ge gef\u00fchrt hat, die nachweislich Hitlers Machtaufstieg zehn Jahre sp\u00e4ter zumindest massiv beg\u00fcnstigten, wenn nicht \u00fcberhaupt erm\u00f6glichten und deren Unterzeichnung Wilson eben kategorisch abgelehnt hatte\u2026) \u2013 Damit Ende \u201919 gut vorbereitet auf die kommende Ausrufung der Pandemie verfolgte ich zun\u00e4chst mit Interesse und einem gewissen Am\u00fcsement die Nachrichten aus China \u2013 wir waren selbst zur Zeit von SARS Covid 1 in Peking gewesen und schon damals entsetzt \u00fcber die allgemeine Panikmache, die Diktatur der Angst, welche offenbar nicht nur die Bek\u00e4mpfung einer st\u00e4rkeren Grippe zum Zwecke hatte \u2013. Als dann die Infektionen nach Europa schwappten und schliesslich auch hier zumindest die Altenheime und Krankenh\u00e4user zum \u2018Schutz der Gebrechlichen\u2019 abgeriegelt wurden, war ich schockiert. Das wurde nicht besser als dann die Grenzkontrollen wieder eingef\u00fchrt wurden. Die Krankheitsverl\u00e4ufe liessen sich in den schlimmsten F\u00e4llen nicht im Entferntesten mit denen der Spanischen Grippe vergleichen, dennoch wurde diese ungeniert als Referenzpunkt angef\u00fchrt. Ich schrieb damals (M\u00e4rz 2020) einen Blogeintrag, Love and Fear<\/em> (der Beginn ist am Ende des Artikels wiedergegeben) \u2013 Ergebnis? Z.B. eine w\u00fctende Zuschrift, ich solle gef\u00e4lligst \u00e4rztlichen Notdienst in Norditalien machen und mir den Bl\u00f6dsinn sparen\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als man ein wenig sp\u00e4ter begann, eine so hervorragende Pers\u00f6nlichkeit wie Sucharit Bhakti durch den Dreck zu ziehen, wurde klar, worauf wir nicht zuliefen sondern -katapultierten: Brave New World Revisited<\/em> mit einem Schuss Best of Orwell<\/em>, zum Beelzebub kein Spass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In den darauffolgenden Monaten wurde weiterhin klar, dass auch in unseren Breitengraden nun g\u00e4lte, was sonst nur im Osten galt: who sticks his neck out is suicidal<\/em>. Damit war den Heroes<\/em> ihr Schlachtruf genommen. Traurig, aber wahr. Noch trauriger: die amerikanischen Grosseltern des Projekts kapierten es nicht und bliesen fr\u00f6hlich in die Pandemiker-Heldenpfeife; als k\u00f6rperliche Reaktion darauf, ungelogen, fand mich erstmal selbst Corona; Dank Angela und ihrer TCM-K\u00fcnste aber kein dicker Hund; es dauerte halt eine Woche plus eine Woche Nachwirkung anstatt 3 Tage und 3 Tage Nachwirkung wie bei den \u00fcblichen Grippekollegen \u2013 und das, obwohl ich wahrscheinlich in einem \u00e4hnlichen Risikoalter stehe, liege, sitze wie der Kollege Caimi; der \u00fcbrigens ein typisches Exempel unserer Giraffenideale ist, aber dazu ein andermal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

W\u00e4hrend wir im Jahr \u201921 noch sieben Pers\u00f6nlichkeiten ausgezeichnet haben, ist seit dem Herbst letzten Jahres noch niemand neues dazu gekommen. Auch letztes Jahr haben wir uns bei der Mehrheit der gew\u00fcnschten Vorschl\u00e4ge quasi auf die Zunge beissen m\u00fcssen. Man muss nicht lange raten woran das liegt; schlimm ist es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seitdem die Lockdowns um sich griffen, fragte ich mich \u00abwie weiter?\u00bb. Im letzten Herbst schliesslich war es klar; vielleicht nicht einfach, aber einfach klar: aktive Beteiligung am Aufbau alternativer, \u00fcbergreifender Netzwerke, bzw. die eigene Schaffung eines solchen. Lokal-Initiativen, inkl. alternativer Umlaufmittel (sog. LETS \u2013 Local Exchange Trading Systems) sind erfahrungsgem\u00e4ss die erfolgreichsten, jedoch wir, d.h. das Giraffe-Network, sind\/ist international. Also gr\u00fcndeten wir das erste \u2018GETS\u2019 (Global Exchange Trade System) und fanden auf dem Weg dahin heraus, dass es einen hervorragenden Vorreiter und Partner auf dem Gebiet gibt, den CES Central Exchange Square, der sich seit dem Ende der Apartheid \u2013 mehr oder weniger zeitgleich mit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges und einer ach so kurz nur w\u00e4hrenden Stimmung des Aufbruchs \u2013 entwickelt hat und heute s\u00e4mtliche Software und Tools \u2013 digital und auch analog verwendbar \u2013 frei zur Verf\u00fcgung stellt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Des weiteren \u00e4nderten wir \u2013 bisher nur intern \u2013 den Untertitel\/Slogan unserer Vereinigung von \u00abStick Your Neck Out\u00bb to \u00abGuardians of Humanity\u00bb. Die ersten zwei wurden eben vorgeschlagen\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ja, daran arbeiten wir neben dem Herk\u00f6mmlichen seit Jahresbeginn: Aufbau der HUMECO (Humanum Eco) Plattform mit eigenem Umlaufmittel, dem HECO. Jeder, der Interesse hat, m\u00f6ge mitmachen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Stick your Neck Out” was and still is the motto of the Giraffe Heroes in America, who have won awards for their courageous and tenacious fight for the commons. Almost five years ago, a European offshoot, the Giraffe Heroes Foundation (GHF) was founded by the author of this article here in Basel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story of the Giraffe Heroes Project is 40 years old and goes back to the founders Ann Medlock and John Graham, who are still active today: Ann was and is an outstanding writer, journalist, feminist; her husband John, ex-diplomat, threw away his promising career at the age of 39 when he realized that the interests of the gentlemen he had to serve no longer had anything to do with the ideals of the American Constitution. He met Ann shortly thereafter, and it was love at first sight. At the same time Ann had just started the GH project, and from then on they took over its development and expansion together: she as an able journalist, he with his experience in the Foreign Service. A highlight came during the perestroika period, when Gorbachev called them to Moscow to reawaken a sense of courage and feeling for the common good in a Russia scarred by the physical and psychological wounds of the one-party dictatorship over some seven decades. …<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first two years after the founding of the Basel NGO, the development was not easy, but in the traditional sense: Giraffe candidates were nominated and commended (or rejected) by the GHF jury and woven into the network. At GHF, we are particularly interested in creating synergies among the various personalities and their activities, in order to extend or increase the radius of their impact, as well as the effectiveness of their work through an enlarged network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bloody Pandemic changed it all. Coincidentally, in the fall of 2019 I read the excellent chronicle of the so-called Spanish Flu by John Barry (former health advisor under Barack Obama) The Great Influenza<\/em>, a factual account as closely medically and historically researched as it is grippingly written. (Just a detail at the end of the book: It had hitherto remained unknown to me that Woodrow Wilson had to leave abruptly and prematurely from the Versailles Treaty negotiations at the end of the war because the virus gripped him – he died of a stroke 6 months later – which created a situation in which the Germans remained powerless against the vengefulness of the allied front, which led to the dictation of the Versailles treaties, which demonstrably led to Hitler’s rise to power ten years later, if not made it possible at all, and which Wilson had just categorically refused to sign…) – So that at the end of ’19 well prepared for the coming proclamation of the pandemic I first followed with interest and a certain amusement the news from China – we had ourselves been in Beijing during the time of SARS Covid 1 and already at that time were appalled at the general scaremongering, the dictatorship of fear, which obviously had not only the fight against a stronger flu as its purpose -. When the infections then spread to Europe and finally at least the old people’s homes and hospitals were sealed off to ‘protect the infirm’, I was shocked. It didn’t get any better when border controls were reintroduced. In the worst cases, the course of the disease could not be remotely compared with that of the Spanish flu, yet this was unabashedly cited as a reference point. I wrote a blog entry at the time (March 2020), Love and Fear <\/em>(the beginning is reproduced at the end of the article) – result? E.g. an angry letter, I should do medical emergency service in Northern Italy and save the nonsense…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a little later one started to drag such an outstanding personality as Sucharit Bhakti through the mud, it became clear what we were not running towards but -catapulted towards: Brave New World Revisited <\/em>with a dash of Best of Orwell<\/em> \u2013 for Beelzebub\u2019s sake, no fun any more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the months that followed, it became clear that in our latitudes, too, what was hitherto only the case in the East, now applied here as well: who sticks his neck out is suicidal<\/em>. Thus, the Heroes were <\/em>deprived of their battle cry. Sad, but true. Sadder still: the American grandparents of the project didn’t get it and happily blew the pandemic hero whistle; as a physical reaction to this, honestly, I got myself Corona for the first time; thanks to Angela and her TCM skills, however, not a big deal; it just lasted a week plus a week after-effect instead of 3 days and 3 days after-effect as with the usual flu  – and that, although I’m probably standing, lying, sitting in a similar risk age as the colleague Marco Caimi,<\/em> who, by the way, is a typical example of our Giraffe ideals – but about that another time\u2026..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While we awarded seven personalities in ’21, no one new has been added since last fall. Last year, too, we had to bite our tongues, so to speak, as for the majority of the proposed nominations. One does not have to guess for a long time what the reason for this is; it is just quite devilish\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the lockdowns became rampant, I asked myself “what next?”. Finally, last autumn, it was clear; perhaps not simple, but simply clear: active participation in the creation of alternative, overarching networks, or the creation of one. Local initiatives, incl. alternative means of circulation (so-called LETS – Local Exchange Trading Systems) are, according to experience, the most successful, but we, i.e. the Giraffe-Network, are\/is international. So we founded the first ‘GETS’ (Global Exchange Trade System) and found out on the way that there is an excellent pioneer and partner in the field, the CES Central Exchange Square, which has been developed since the end of apartheid by a bunch of very smart fellows from the  Kapstadt stock exchange – more or less at the same time as the end of the Cold War and an oh-so-short-lived mood of awakening which followed – and today makes all software and tools required freely available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, we changed – so far only internally – the subtitle\/slogan of our association from “Stick Your Neck Out” to “Guardians of Humanity”. The first two were just proposed….<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, we have been working on this since the beginning of the year, in addition to the conventional: building the HUMECO (Humanum Eco) platform with its own means of circulation, the HECO. Everyone who is interested, please join us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
